Health & Safety Policy for Pressure Washing Elephant and Castle Services

This document sets out the Health and Safety Policy for pressure washing operations carried out by our team in the Elephant and Castle area. The policy applies to all elements of pressure washing Elephant and Castle services including building facades, pavements, and external surfaces where high-pressure water and cleaning agents are used. The purpose is to protect employees, contractors, members of the public and the environment by defining responsibilities, controls and safe working practices. This statement is intended to be clear, practical and proportionate to the risks encountered in daily operations.

The policy covers roles and responsibilities for management, supervisors and operatives. Management will ensure adequate resources, training and supervision are provided and that risk assessments are current. Operatives must follow safe systems of work, use personal protective equipment and report hazards. Subcontractors and third parties engaged for related tasks must comply with the same standards. Where activities intersect with a rubbish company service area or waste contractors, co-operation is essential to control contamination, waste segregation and lawful disposal.

All work will be planned and risk assessed before starting. Risk control measures will consider the nature of the surface, presence of people, traffic, confined spaces and proximity to drains and watercourses. The policy recognises the specific hazards of Elephant and Castle pressure washing operations such as high-pressure water injuries, slip risks from run-off, chemical exposure and potential damage to delicate surfaces. Controls include exclusion zones, signage, drip trays and containment to prevent environmental contamination.

Training, Competence and Equipment

Personnel will be trained in safe operation of power washers, lance control, temperature settings, chemical handling and emergency shutdown procedures. Training records will be maintained and periodic refresher training provided. Only competent staff may operate specialist machinery. Equipment will be inspected daily and maintained according to manufacturer guidance. Portable power washers, hoses, nozzles and pumps must be visually checked for wear, leaks and secure connections to avoid sudden failures that could cause injury or property damage.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory on all tasks: suitable gloves, eye protection, waterproof protective clothing, non-slip footwear and hearing protection where appropriate. PPE usage will be enforced and supplied free of charge; any defects or losses must be reported and replacements arranged promptly.

A documented inspection and maintenance regime will be in place for all pressure cleaning machinery and ancillary equipment. Faulty machines will be removed from service and tagged until repaired. Electrical safety will be maintained through appropriate isolation, use of residual current devices and regular PAT testing for portable equipment.

Safe Work Systems, Environmental Controls and Waste Management

Work will be conducted under a safe system that includes pre-start checks, exclusion zones, barriers and traffic management when working near roads or footpaths. Operations that could affect drainage or public areas must include containment strategies and measures to prevent contaminated water entering storm drains. Where appropriate, run-off will be collected and disposed of via authorised waste streams. Collaboration with local waste contractors and the rubbish council or rubbish company service area is essential to manage removed debris, paint flakes or contaminated silt in accordance with environmental regulations.

Chemical use will be minimised and, where required, low-toxicity, biodegradable alternatives will be selected. All chemicals must be used in accordance with their safety data sheets and stored securely. Spill response procedures and spill kits must be available on site. Any release to the environment will be reported and contained immediately. Noise and vibration controls, such as limiting operating hours and using low-noise equipment, will be applied to reduce nuisance to nearby residents and businesses.

Incident reporting and first-aid arrangements are central to this policy. All injuries, near misses and potentially hazardous occurrences must be reported, recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence. First-aid kits and trained first-aiders will be available on site. Emergency procedures, including arrangements for ambulance access and fire response, will be clearly communicated to staff and displayed at the site where practical.
